5/13/1857Sir Ronald Ross, bacteriologist, member of Indian Medical service, Nobel awardee and editor of 'Science Progress', was born at Almora, UP.
5/13/1857Mughal Emperor Akbar was proclaimed as successor of Humayun at the age of tewelve years at Kalanur, Gurudaspur district, Punjab. Akbar (1542-1605), grandson of Babur, became third Mughal Emperor at the age of 13 years. He de-established Islam as state religion and declared himself impartial ruler of Hindus and Muslims. He also encouraged Art, Culture and Religious Tolerance.
5/27/1964Gulzarilal Nanda was entrusted the responsibility as Acting Prime Minster of India. He held this office till June 9, 1964. He is till date the only Acting Prime Minster of India.
12/21/1974Inssatvahana, the first establishment to give submarine training, was commissioned at Visakhapatnam.
6/28/1921Sahityaratna P. V. Narsingh Rao, former Prime Minister of India, was born.
1/4/1932Mahatma Gandhi and other members of his All-India National Congress are back in jail again. After the collapse of the London conference, British authorities cracked down even harder on Gandhi and his followers, and the Mahatma urged Indians to increase their acts of civil disobedience. ""Wake up from sleep,"" Gandhi said as he ordered a boycott of British goods. ""Discard foreign cloth. Discard narcotics. Discard violence. Defy all orders calculated to crush the national spirit."" The government declared Gandhi's Congress an illegal organization. Under new laws, even peaceful picketing is illegal. The Congress party responded to the crackdown by recruiting more followers and striking more plants.
