1/21/1963Acharaya Shivpujan Sahai, famous Hindi writer, poet and novelist, died. He was editor of Hindi journals like ""Marwari Sudhar"", ""Samanwaya"", ""Adarsh"" etc. He wrote 400 short stories and 67 biographies. His novel ""Dehati Dunia"" is acclaimed as first regional novel in Hindi.
5/30/1950Devdutta Ramkrishna Bhandarkar, great historian and archaeologist, passed away.
6/10/1946Gandhiji refused to enthuse over allied victory as it was not a ""victory of truth over false-hood"".
6/9/1964Lal Bahadur Shastri became the second Prime Minister of India when the country was shocked of Jawaharlal Nehru's death and Indo-China war. Shastri gave the quotation ""Jai Jawan Jai Kisan"" which motivated the war-affected Indians to boost their morale. He remained in this office till he died on January 11, 1966 at Taskent. In his cabinet, Indira Gandhi served as Minister of Information and Broadcasting.
